QUOTES FROM OUR BLUFFTON SPORT'S CAMP 2008

“This camp helped me spiritually by getting closer to the Lord – athletically, it helped strengthen me.”

“It made me closer to Christ, and it made me more disciplined.”

“This camp has helped me realize that Jesus Christ is the greatest thing for my life.  Also, it has helped me develop better skills as a receiver.”

“In sports I grew better thanks to the FCA staff and I accepted and surrendered our Lord by saying a prayer.”

Campers get inspired and fueled up in God's Word before a day of perspiration begins!

On July 30-31, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes hosted their first two day football camp for students going into grades 5-8 in southern Michigan.  The football camp was held at the Adrian College campus in Adrian, Michigan.  High School and college coaches assisted in running drills each day, covering the various skills in football.  FCA helped run the popular “Air Force” football games and programming.  Our goal was to provide another incredible camp of skills and preparation for football and life.  Over 80 coaches and players showed up!  More than 50% of the campers surrendered their life to Jesus Christ!!

Each day the campers worked hard and received expert coaching.  Campers received a shirt, wristband, Bible, snacks, and prizes.

NCAA Quarterback Steven Threet spent time at camp on Wednesday, July 30.  Steven, Adrian High School alum, transferred from Georgia Tech prior to the start of fall camp in 2007, to the University of Michigan.  He is battling for the starting quarterback position.  Steve attended Adrian High School (2006) coached by Phil Jacobs, accumulated 1,896 passing yards and 20 touchdowns his senior season ... had 1,528 passing yards and 19 touchdowns as a junior ... threw for 1,400 yards and tossed 10 touchdowns sophomore year.

Also, assisting was Gary Gray, physical therapist, has taught Applied Functional Science to tens-of-thousands of professionals; and has been sought out by top professional athletes, trainers, and coaches.

Finally, in attendance on Thursday was Shawn Lazarus, a four-year letter winner and starter at defensive tackle in 29 games for the University of Michigan (2002 graduate) spent a brief stint with the Detroit Lions.  Shawn currently works as a detention officer in the Summit County Juvenile Court system and is an active community volunteer serving under Team J.A.M.. Shawn is most passionate about investing in current and future community leaders. He continually serves the community through local schools, youth sports organizations, churches, Baseball Chapel and Team J.A.M..  Shawn shared his faith and challenged the players to surrender their life to Jesus Christ!

    ACE Girls Volleyball Camp
    June 17-19, 2008
    Wauseon High School Gym

Over 50 students, coaches, and staff were part of the Ace FCA Volleyball Camp, June 17-19 in Wauseon.  Campers from Delta, Evergreen, Wauseon, and Pettisville worked hard and had a blast.  For three days, girls from grade 4-8 worked on their volleyball skills, trained, and learned what it meant to "Get Focused."  Campers were challenged from Philippians 3:13-14 - learning four key words used in scripture and life - desire, discipline, dedication, and destination.  One player said she couldn't wait until next year's camp and asked if we could make it a 5 day camp, instead of a 3 day camp.  A big thanks to all the coaches and players who assisted in making this camp awesome!

  • 2008 Bluffton Sports Camp
    June 23-26, 2008

Our largest camp was found at Bluffton University this summer, with over 270 campers and staff attending!  Featured sports included: Girls Volleyball, Boys and Girls Basketball, Football, Cross-Country and a late addition - Cheerleading!  Each sport featured a collegiate coach and additional high school coaches to provide excellent training. Joel Penton, former Ohio State football player and his co-worker Ryan Holliday provided excellent evening chapels which challenged us to "Get Focused!"  Students from Delta, Evergreen, Pettisville, Montpelier, Wauseon, Swanton, and Bryan attended this camp from our area.   More students attended from Cleveland, Toledo, Youngstown, across Ohio, and even Indiana.  More than 50 students gave their life to the Lord, while another +50 recommitted their life to the Lord.  Thank you for your prayers and support!

On July 28 & 29, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes hosted their annual two day football camp for students going into grades 5-8.  The football camp was held at the Defiance College campus, at Coressel stadium.  Students from all over the area attended our growing camp.  The Defiance College football staff ran drills each day, covering the various skills in football.  FCA helped with the popular “Air Force” football games and programming.  Together FCA and Defiance College provided another incredible camp of skills and preparation for football and life.

NCAA Quarterback Ben Mauk shared his past football and faith experiences with the campers on Monday, July 28thBen Mauk began his football career at Kenton High School setting national records with 6,540 passing yards and 76 touchdowns through the air his senior season ... set national career passing records for completions (1,105), attempts (1,931) and yards (17,534) and is second with 179 career passing touchdowns ... led the Wildcats to back-to-back state championships ... Gatorade's 2002 State of Ohio Football Player of the Year.  Ben Mauk played in 12 of 13 games with Cincinnati during the 2007 season, and set a program record with 31 passing touchdowns. He helped lead UC to 10-3 record including a victory in the Papajohns.com Bowl.

Clay Simpkins of Wauseon, came on Tuesday and shared his faith with the players.  Clay is only a junior in high school, but he is being looked at nationally as a future kicker.  Being ranked 26th in the preseason for high school kickers, God is placing him in position to share his faith.  Clay won a Gold Medal at the Goodwill Games in Mexico this past year and shared on the word "discipline" with the players.

We look forward to another great camp next July 2009.

    FCA MX Camp
     August 2008

Two students from the Wauseon area returned to the FCA Motocross Camp at Lakeville, OH.  Mitch Weber and Luke George spent the first week in August increasing their riding skills and getting focused on God. Pro Motocross racers shared and challenged the riders to be focused on the course and in life.

Luke shares this: "During huddle times our leaders taught about the scripture that says to not worry about what happened, about what's behind; you can't do anything about it. Don't dwell on it. Focus on what you have to get done. In motocross that means that if you mess up in the previous moto, don't focus on it - focus on what you know."

Mitch shares, "During huddle time, they spoke about the verses that say, 'To learn, you must be taught, and to refuse teaching is stupid.'"

    Youth Golf Camp
    Partnering with Wauseon P&R

Wauseon’s Park & Recreation Department and Buckeye Border FCA teamed up June 16-19, 2008 to host “Guidelines to Golf” camp.  It was a good week of instruction and inspiration!  Golfers received expert instructions from Wauseon’s Coach Mike Marshall and staff.  FCA provided spiritual challenges, along with a few fun surprises.  Thanks for your prayers and we pray that these campers will hit the ball straight and live their lives focused for God.

    Bryan Soccer Camp

During the hottest week of the summer, July 14-17, 2008 - Coach Kim Pepple and her 21 student coaches ran one of the best new soccer camps for FCA!  Despite the warm weather 23 campers had a great week of inspiration and perspiration.  The campers came everyday with great attitudes, ready to learn, and willing to work hard.  I was impressed with how they remembered the words of the day and the inspiring lessons taught.  It was incredible to see so many high school student coaches serving and working one on one with campers.  This camp is bound to be a big hit in future years!
